What Does Tint Base Mean?

A tint base is the untinted paint that a store's tinting machine adds colorant to in order to produce the color you picked. It's paint with everything in it except the final color — and which base a color requires determines how light or dark that color can be. If the can in your hand says "Base 2", "Deep Base", or "Tint Base" on the label, it means the paint inside isn't a finished color yet: it's the starting point the store mixes your color into.

How Tinting Actually Works at the Store

When you hand over a paint chip or color name, the store looks up that color's formula: which base to use, plus precise amounts of a handful of liquid colorants (universal tints). The machine dispenses the colorants into the base can, the can goes into a shaker, and out comes your color. The formula is usually printed on a label stuck to the lid, so the same color can be reproduced later.

The base itself contributes the binder, the sheen, and — critically — the white pigment. The colorant contributes only the hue. That split is why the same colorant formula produces a completely different result in different bases, and why the right base matters as much as the right formula.

Why There's More Than One Base

The main difference between bases is how much white pigment (typically titanium dioxide) they contain:

The reason is physical: white pigment reflects light, so the more of it a base contains, the lighter the final mix is forced to stay. You can't make a deep navy in a pastel base — the titanium dioxide keeps pushing the mix back toward pastel, no matter how much colorant goes in. Go the other way and use a deep base for a pale color, and there isn't enough white pigment to hide the surface underneath: you get weak, patchy coverage and a color that doesn't match the chip. The base sets the range; the colorant picks the point within it.

Many paint lines number their bases instead of naming them. The common convention is that lower numbers contain more white pigment and serve paler colors:

Tint Strength and Colorant Load, in Plain Words

Colorant is dispensed by volume — measured in fluid ounces per gallon, and in fine fractions of an ounce (many systems count in 48ths or 96ths of an ounce). A pale color might call for a fraction of an ounce of a single colorant; a deep color can call for several ounces spread across multiple colorants. That total is the color's tint strength or colorant load: it's how "far" the formula pushes the base away from its untinted state.

This is why bases exist at all. A base with lots of white pigment only needs — and only tolerates — a small colorant load. A deep or clear base is designed to swallow a heavy load and still behave properly as paint. The formula on the can lid records exactly this: the base plus each colorant and its amount.

Here's the part that trips people up when they move between paint and screens: a paint tint and a digital tint are inverses of each other. At the store, tinting means adding color to a can that's mostly white — you start light and push toward the color. In digital design, a tint means adding white to a color — you start with the color and push toward light. Same word, opposite directions, same underlying idea: every color sits somewhere on a line between white and full strength.
